APPLY YOUR IMAGINATION TO YOUR GARDEN with this perennial that looks like an angel now, in October:  stands straight & tall, and the whole stem is golden!
Patrinia!
Patrinia is in bloom now, 10/1, stems forming a vase shape; easily grown in average, well drained soils in full sun to part shade. Its claim to fame is an abundance of yellow summer blooms,  but then October flowers become gold & are stunning. It is hardy to Zone 5 (doesn't need a protective winter mulch).  Picture this!: butter yellow--planted w/Russian Sage-- light lavender--the flower shapes are opposite, so you have a real contrast!
